Fewer sick leaves than in several years in December – bodes well for Christmas
2024-12-18: With just a few days left until Christmas, the sick leave situation is more positive than it has been in several years. Colds and parental leave for taking care of sick children account for the majority of absences in workplaces, but the trend of unusually high sickness rates before Christmas, seen after COVID, now seems to have reversed. This is shown by recent figures from Falck Sjuk & Frisk, the most comprehensive and up-to-date tool for analyzing absence statistics in Sweden.
"It seems that the record-high sickness rates in December, which have been present in the years following COVID, have now been broken. This bodes well for Christmas," says Maria Steneskog Nyman, head of Falck's Sjuk och Frisk service.
All of 2024 has been characterized by relatively low sickness rates, with occasional spikes in specific cause areas. During the autumn, colds have been particularly rampant in Swedish workplaces, which has also led to a relatively high amount of parental leave for taking care of sick children. At the beginning of December, there are also signs that the winter sickness has arrived, with a slight increase in sick leaves due to stomach-related illnesses.
"In October, the cold situation was at its worst. Although quite a few colds continue, often with prolonged coughing, the situation is now calmer before Christmas than we've seen in recent years. As always, it's important to wash hands and be mindful of not spreading illness to those who are older and vulnerable during the major holidays. We don't want to return to the COVID era, but some advice and strategies to keep ourselves and our loved ones healthy remain relevant," says Maria Steneskog Nyman.
Overall, the absence rate has been relatively low throughout 2024. At the same time, there is a growing hidden number regarding illness, as more people have the opportunity to work from home even when they are sick.
"Among managers and office workers, there is a significant hidden number. We know that many who can choose to work from home when they are sick. It's both good and bad that we have this option. It's certainly beneficial to be able to work if you feel well, but it becomes a challenge if you are actually quite unwell and should focus on recovering," says Maria Steneskog Nyman.
