MRSA testing is used to determine if a person is carrying MRSA bacteria, which stands for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. MRSA spreads through contact transmission and is a significant healthcare hygiene problem worldwide.
MRSA consists of strains of staphylococci that are resistant to penicillin-based antibiotics. Infections with MRSA can therefore be difficult to treat and may be dangerous for individuals with weakened immune systems or other health issues.
MRSA testing is conducted on individuals at high risk of carrying the bacteria. This may include people who have been in hospitals or care homes outside the Nordic countries in the past six months, individuals with chronic wounds or skin infections, or those who have been in contact with someone who is a carrier of MRSA.
Healthcare employees or students about to start internships in healthcare settings may also be eligible for MRSA testing.
